What is a dental implant?
An implant is a permanent restoration that replaces the roots of your missing tooth. The implant, which is a small metal screw or post, is placed into the jawbone where the tooth used to be. From there, the implant will integrate and fuse with the jawbone, providing an incredibly strong foundation from which to support one or more false teeth.
How long does it take for the implant and jawbone to fuse together?
The average length of time it takes for the jawbone to fuse together with the implant is anywhere from 3-6 months. Once the implant is placed you will come back into the office so we can see how everything is progressing. Once the implant and jawbone have fully fused together we can begin the next step in the treatment process.
When is the artificial tooth or teeth placed over the implant?
Depending on the type of dental implant that is placed, some implants will require a special attachment known as an abutment (other implants have this structure built-in). An abutment is attached to the top of the implant right above the gum line and it helps to connect the false tooth with the implant. Once the abutment is placed it will take a couple of weeks before we can place the crown.
How long do dental implants last?
The amazing thing about dental implants is that they are truly the closest thing to real teeth. This means that with proper oral care and maintenance your implant could last the rest of your life.
